Fair Trade Coffee

Fair Trade Coffee

Most of the world’s coffee is grown by farmers that own just a few acres of land.  Fair Trade certification helps these farmers get paid fair wages.  Most of the farmers work hard and are not paid a fair price for their coffee.  Part of this is because they know little about developing a business and are dealing with a middle-man.  There are cooperatives that have been developed to ensure that the farmers are paid a fair price and are being educated about how to run a long-term business successfully in the global marketplace.  Farmers are being educated about safe working conditions.

Fair wages means taking out the middle-man and teaching farmers about direct trade.  It doesn’t translate to a more expensive product.  Fair Trade Organizations help the farmer to deal directly with producers.  It is important to support Fair Trade coffee as this in turn helps improve living conditions, promotes fair wages and encourages an environmentally sustainable future for the farmers.
